J.K. Rowling serves as an executive producer on HBO’s Harry Potter series and works closely with the creative team during development. She said she “worked closely” with writers and reviewed early scripts, as the series adapts the books into a multi-season television format.
Francesca Gardiner oversees the project as showrunner, while Mark Mylod directs multiple episodes. HBO produces the series alongside Warner Bros. Television, Brontë Film and TV, and Heyday Films, with plans to develop the adaptation over a decade.
Casey Bloys confirmed that the series will not release new seasons every year, stating it is “just not possible” given the scale of production, adding, “These shows are complicated to do.”
Dominic McLaughlin plays Harry Potter, joined by Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley and Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger in the upcoming HBO series. The ensemble cast also features John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore and Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall. Paapa Essiedu plays Severus Snape, while Nick Frost plays Rubeus Hagrid.
Filming for the first season started in July 2025 at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden in Hertfordshire. The season, titled Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, includes eight episodes and will debut on HBO in the United States and on HBO Max globally on December 25, 2026.
